Q-Tip Snowman Craft and Learning Tool

I love activities with kids that offer up a fun and educational benefit all-in-one! Lately, my son Noah, has been obsessed with drawing “family portraits”, and like most young kids, the picture of the family members do not always have a nose, two arms, body, or even legs.

Making a snowman with a few simple supplies is something I thought would be a perfect time to re-discuss with him different body parts. It also gave an excuse to play “Frosty the Snowman”.  See, such educational opportunities this craft is offering!

You will need:

White and Black paint, one q-tip, glue, three white circles, colored construction paper, and orange construction

First, glue the three circles to make the body of the snowman. I would ask Noah to point to the snowman’s head, body, and “legs”. Noah quickly reminded me that “snowmen do NOT have legs Mommy, you are so silly”. Maybe he is teaching me about body parts of a character!

Then, ask for your child to point to where the nose should go on the snowman. If they get it right the first time, you just may have a genius on your hands.

Every snowman needs a scarf and every child needs to know about patterns, right? Cut out rectangular shapes from two different-colored construction paper.  Discuss with your child what a pattern is (something that repeats itself) and then show them an example of a pattern scarf for your snowman.  Have them demonstrate their own pattern for their scarf.

After putting the scarf on, tell your child it would be nice if your snowman had three buttons.  Have them point to where the buttons would go and place the exact number that you tell them to. Do this with the q-tip and black paint.

Ask your child, “We have a nose and clothing for our snowman, what else does our snowmen need?” The correct answer should be eyes, mouth, and arms. You may get some fun answers so just go with it. If your child seems confused, discuss with them the body parts that you both have, and have them look back to their snowmen to see what is missing.

Finally, ask your child “what do we need to to build a snowman?” The answer should be snow.  With a q-tip, use the white paint to create snow around your snowmen.
