OKC Spotlight::Bountiful Baskets

At Oklahoma City Moms Blog we feel there are incredible not-for-profit organizations and resources right here in our community. They support different needs of OKC families, mothers, and children and we’d like to help spread the word about them.  Lauren gives us a sneak peak inside of one of her favorite organizations:: Bountiful Baskets.

It’s a fresh new year and I bet you have fresh new goals & amazing plans for 2015. I’m there with you! I hope you have the right people in your lives to empower you to push for that better version of you! Most people toss around the ideas of a new found fitness routine or a healthier diet. Instead of making these changes temporary, strive to make them a way of life.

So many people don’t know about the best kept secret: Bountiful Baskets Food Co-op. If you do, then you know how easy life can be. Oklahoma has several pick up locations; you can see the list here.

This organization is all run by volunteers who are passionate about spreading healthy foods. There are so many options to choose from when purchasing your basket. If you are a first timer, you will have to pay the one time basket fee. Their website will show you what options are available for your pick up location.

The conventional basket is $15 and its $15 well spent. You can upgrade your basket to all organic produce, for an extra $10. (Again, so worth it!) The baskets usually have 6 fruit items and 6 vegetable items. Items will be different each week. Bountiful Baskets usually offer different packs, such as: juicing packs, variety bread packs, and granola. They sell in season produce in bulk, like: carrots, apples, and pineapple.

It doesn’t matter what basket you choose, you will always be satisfied. Bountiful Baskets strives to provide the highest quality foods at an affordable price. The food you receive has never been to a grocery store and is mostly local. Bountiful Baskets produce comes from the facility, to the truck, to the location.

A few things you might need to know if you are a first timer:

•Bring a bag to pick up your produce. The baskets stay at the location for the following week.
•Bring your confirmation, normally received through e-mail.
•Check your location time. ‘A’ week and ‘B’ week may have different pick up times.
•Check your produce before bagging it up.
•If you don’t pick up your basket, it will be donated to someone in the community.
•If you cannot pick up your basket, you can send someone else, as long as they have your confirmation.
•If you want to volunteer, show up to your location an hour early.

My family has really benefited from these baskets and my daughter enjoys coming with me to play “grocery store”. Since you never know what your basket will contain, it can be fun to get creative at meal time and step out of your comfort zone. I don’t think I’ve ever wasted anything I’ve received in my basket. It’s so great to see locations popping up all over the state; making healthy food easily accessible to all!

Lauren
I’m a local Okie, wife, and mom of two. I work full time and teach yoga a few nights a week. I am very passionate about family and healthy living. I love to play with my babies & I cherish every moment I get with them. I love to bake, play in the garden, and stay active. My house is never clean, my family is (usually) always happy, and I drink way too much coffee.
