Homemade Face Moisturizer

I am in a constant battle with my skin. I don’t know what happened, as a teenager I had beautiful skin, which is why I’m convinced I was cursed in high school by someone who was really into “The Craft” – “Let’s give her adult acne, weird dry patches and wrinkles that make her look like a shar pei.” I’m kidding about the curse (sort of), but because of my skin battles, I’ve tried a LOT of different skin products, subsequently, spending a ton of money.

I recently had a friend recommend making my own facial products, which I was hesitant to do because I’m not really a DIY sort of girl, but on a whim I did it and fell in love! I’m not saying all of my skin problems vanished over night, but after using this moisturizer and serum for almost a month I can DEFINITELY tell a difference. First of all, it just feels natural. Many of my past products left almost a medicinal film on my skin – but these feel so good.

After researching I’ve found there are a lot of different ways to make homemade moisturizers and you can alter the recipe to fit your skin needs. I did a very basic one and plan on changing it up after this one is gone.

Oil Bases:

Sweet Almond Oil – a great all around face oil

Avocado Oil – great for dry skin and anti aging

Coconut Oil – great anti microbial property

Jojoba Oil – great for dry, aging, oily, normal or acne prone skin

Essential Oils:

Dry Skin: lavender, rose, chamomile

Oily Skin: Lavender, lemongrass, cedarwood

Acne-Prone Skin: tea tree, lavender, peppermint

Mature Skin or Wrinkles: frankincense, lavender, sandalwood

Homemade Facial Moisturizer / Cleanser

When you cleanse with oils you want to use high quality products. This means when using coconut oil you need to get UN-refined, extra virgin and organic, so that you don’t clog your pores. Sam’s Club sells a big thing of unrefined coconut oil for $9, or you can get it at Sprouts.

1 Cup Coconut Oil

1 Tsp Sweet Almond Oil

1 Tsp Avocado Oil

Whip them together to a creamy texture. Add 10 drops of your essential oil.  Scoop into a glass jar and done!

If you want an exfoliator, you can add 1 tsp of baking soda.

I use this with my Clarasonic, by putting about a nickel sized portion on the brush and scrubbing for 1-2 minutes. Then at night, on clean skin only, I apply it as my moisturizer. I’ve also used it in the morning, but you have to let it dry a few minutes before you apply your makeup.

Anti-Aging Serum

In a one ounce glass bottle with dropper, add 30 drops of Frankincense. Fill the rest with sweet almond oil or jojoba oil. Use morning and night on clean, dry skin – face, neck and chest.

Anit Aging Serum.jpgI’m in LOVE with this. It also doubles as a moisturizer, but since it has so much frankincense, it’s great for wrinkles. Even in three weeks I can tell a difference in those little wrinkles around my eyes!

Where can you buy these oils?

Whitney Jackson
My name is Whitney and I'm married to my talented husband, Blake and we have two insanely wonderful kids, Violet (3) and Wyatt (2). I've been a stay at home mom for a little over a year, after making the decision to leave a world of spread sheets for a world of forts made out of sheets. I work part time as a day school teacher after realizing I actually love working with kids and I may even be good at it. I enjoy reading, taking family road trips, drinking copious amounts of coffee and hope to one day to be a professional thrift store shopper (only slightly kidding). I'm excited to be a part of this group, because raising kids is rough and everyone needs a village, even if a virtual one. I hope we're all able to discover new parts of our city, give and get advice from how to get your kids to stop eating chalk (me) to raising strong confident children and maybe even make some new friends.
