Get Outta Here, Mama {4 Mini Getaway Spots Close to Home}

I’m not generally the “romantic” type, but as our anniversary approached this year I knew we needed HAD to get the heck out of town for a night. Somehow, I managed to rally the troops and get our kiddos sold off for an ENTIRE WEEKEND, which has never happened in almost two years. So what do this mama and daddy do? Run for the hills for TWO nights…and never look back!! Until, you know, FaceTime dates when we miss those little stinkers.

Over the four short years we’ve been married, we’ve gotten away for weekend babymoons and sporadic nights of refuge when the grandparents recognized our “cries” for help {aka: SLEEP…and yeah, sometimes I did actually cry about it}. If you’re like me, the process of actually packing everyone up for the weekend and getting them to their respective places isn’t as fun when you’ve only got ONE night somewhere, and barely seems worth it. When you need some time alone with your S.O. though…ain’t no mama gonna say it’s “not worth it” for 24 blissful hours alone.

No fear my fellow mamas–I’ve compiled a list of various places in and around the metro for your getaway pleasures. Various driving times, pricing and scenery, dependent upon your preferences…pick a weekend, ship off the babies and gooooooo! You deserve it!

1. Stay Fancy in the Central Hot Spots

This doesn’t always seem fun when you want to get AWAY on your “getaway”, but there are some amazing local spots around the Metro that you can choose from for a quick trip “away”.

Just want a night in a fancy hotel, where you don’t have to clean up anyone’s mess or make the bed?? Yes, please! Check out hot spots in downtown OKC like SheratonAloft, The Skirvin Hilton Hotel, or Embassy Suites in Norman. With areas such as Bricktown, Paseo, Midtown, and Campus Corner, there are tons of restaurants and activities to enjoy. Hit up a sporting event (we ARE home to the Thunder, Dodgers and all things OU), the best hipster hotspots, beer by the wall, or just the amenities offered by the hotels so you never even have to leave.

{Bonus: Embassy Suites has an indoor pool, free adult beverages during select times in the evenings, AND the best continental breakfast you’ve ever feasted on!}

 2. Go Old School

I don’t know about you, but Lorelai Gilmore and her magical Dragonfly Inn has always made me want to own a bed and breakfast.

Since I’m not super awesome like that, visiting them is just as satisfying {and a lot less work}. B&B’s all over the state keep the locals and visitors alike feeling like they’ve stepped into a different world. Whether you go north to Guthrie, south to Davis, (north) east to Enid, west to Muskogee, or stay central in Edmond/OKC/Norman, you’re sure to find one you love!

{Bonus: most are located near local wineries or have fun, local activities on the weekend! Double Bonus: Davis is home to Bedre Fine Chocolate…duh!}

3. Go Rustic

We have lots of great lake spots to explore in Oklahoma, but Beavers Bend is my happy place. We took our first babymoon there. And before that, I would visit a few times a year with my dad or girlfriends.

They have small cabins for a more intimate experience and plenty in this tiny town to keep busy…or not! You can golf or hike in the beautiful state park, eat the best pizza on the planet while listening to live bands at Grateful Head Pizza, visit the local winery Girls Gone Wine, kayak/swim/fish/explore the gorgeous Broken Bow Lake, or just stay at your cabin to relax, make s’mores, and appreciate the nature we don’t usually find in the ‘burbs…or that bottle of wine you picked up.  I’m telling you, mamas–it’s good for your soul.

{Bonus: this area is also SUPER kid friendly, so plan a trip back with the kids!}

4. Go to Vegas…at half the cost

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but we have a plethora of casino attractions and resorts that seemed to pop up overnight–some huge comedians and musical artists sell out shows at most of them!

If you want the more “exciting, upscale” feel of the scene, visit the Hard Rock Tulsa {the most traditional thing to Vegas this part of the Bible Belt} or Choctaw Casino and Resort {movie theater anyone?}.

Looking for that “old school, Gatsby” feel? The Artesian Hotel in Sulphur was our choice getaway this year and even though we don’t gamble, it had plenty of things to enjoy both in the hotel and around town! {Bonus: most are within an hour or two travel time!!}

It doesn’t matter which route you decide to go, you’ll soon find that we have plenty to do in our great state!

Whether you want a posh, luxurious type of spoiling, or a relaxing, chill atmosphere–you’re sure to find it closer to home than you think.

Loralei is a busy boy mom to Everett and Roman, and fabulous wife to Justin. Raised in Edmond, she became a Norman transplant after marriage and hasn't found many differences...other than the craziness that is an OU game day. A high school English teacher by day, she enjoys spending time with both sides of her hilarious (and extremely loud) family, reading, writing, cooking and shopping for down time. She thinks that there might be a light at the end of the tunnel SOMEDAY with diapers and bottles, but until then, she tries to soak up every sweet, snuggly, fit throwing, negotiating-with-a-toddler moment...and thoroughly enjoys every second of it.
