5 Hygge Ways to Welcome Fall

I know, I know, it’s only the middle of September, but I can’t be the only one dreaming of October, right? Nevermind the temps in the 90s, I’m ready to bust out my coziest sweaters and light some candles. It’s time to put away your bikini, change out your American flag wreath, and hang up a mini pumpkin and maple leaf garland! To help you make the transition to the new season, here are 5 of the ultimate hygge ways to usher in those autumn vibes.

Binge a Feel-Good TV Show or Book

Personally, I’m obsessed with shows like Gilmore Girls and Sweet Magnolias during this time of year. Something about their hallmark-esque towns get me right in the feels and helps me escape the humdrum of my daily life. I love imagining that I live in a quaint little town with plenty of boutiques to window shop, a squad of besties that are available 24/7, and a closet chock full of curated outfits. Black and white films, Halloween-themed movies (I’m talkin’ about you Halloweentown), and classic sitcoms all give me that same hyggeish feeling-  especially when I’m wrapped up in a chunky knit blanket with some hot tea. If TV shows aren’t your thing, dive into a classic book or check one of the boxes off your “want to read” lists and download “Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe” onto your Kindle.

  1. Diffuse Essential Oils

They say scent is one of the closest ties to memory, and I have to agree. Nothing summons good memories of autumns past like the smell of warm spices, fruits and vanilla wafting through the house. But wait! Put down your trusty neon-green-“Caramel Apple”-scented candle on your mantle, and sprinkle a few drops of your favorite essential oil instead! Find a cute diffuser that goes with your decor, mix up a festive blend, and soon your living room will smell like you’re about to take a sip of the most delicious holiday beverage known to womankind- the almighty PSL. Not to mention, you’ll skip all the toxic fumes and chemicals that traditional candles emit, and can enjoy your holiday scents worry-free when it comes to your health.

  1. Take a Nature Hike

There’s no better way to personally experience the changing of seasons than by getting outside and immersing yourself in nature. Hiking in July is a sweatfest, but now is the perfect time to start getting out little by little, building yourself up for longer hikes as the weather cools down. Use it as a time to pray, meditate, think, do whatever it is you need to do to center yourself. The transition from summer to autumn is a beautiful one, and it’d be a shame to miss out on it by being stuck inside all day. Even if you can’t commit to a full hike, try and get outside on your lunch break and take note of the leaves changing, the different smells, and animal activity as the weather slowly transitions to fall.

4.  Revamp Your Wardrobe

Sundresses and shorts are cute and all, but have you ever experienced the pure joy of wearing a knit top and cords on a chilly day? By the end of summer, skimpy outfits are feeling played-out; cozy sweaters, silky soft leggings, and layers are in. Some of us love to get out and physically browse in the stores, others love to curl up in bed and shop late into the night. There is definitely something extra hygge about waking up to packages delivered to your doorstep. Treat yourself to a new wardrobe and get ready to jump into the new season with style.

  1. Change Up Your Decor

Whether you’re a “neutrals/rattan/autumn-leaf-palette” kinda girl, or a full-on “bats/orange&black/spooky-all-the-way” lover, this is prime redecorating time! Switch out that green summer garland on your fireplace for something more muted and earthy, hang up a pumpkin wreath, and replace your light gauzy throw blankets for something more plush and substantial. One way to quickly transform a space is to pop in some cute themed pillows- it’s so easy but packs a huge punch when it comes to lending a cozy vibe. Flameless candles and salt rock lamps are perfect for moody lighting, and don’t forget to get some cute porch decorations to make sure the outside is just as cute as the inside! Fresh pumpkins are just starting to come into season, so pay your local farmer a visit and stock up on gourds of all different textures and colors.

Fall is the coziest season of all, so don’t miss out on the short window we’re given to savor it. How you choose to welcome autumn is up to you, as long as it brings you joy and inspires that hygge feeling we all long for at this time of year.
